Two "series" of SmCo are available, namely Series 1:5 and Series 2:17 (SmCo5, Sm2Co17). They are generallyranked similarly in strength to neodymium magnets, but have:

  • Higher temperature ratings;
  • Higher coercivity;
  • Extremely resistant to demagnetization.

SmCo Magnets

General Introduction

SmCo magnet, a type of rare earth magnet, is a strong permanent magnet made of an alloy of samarium and cobalt.
Two "series" of SmCo are available, namely Series 1:5 and Series 2:17 (SmCo5, Sm2Co17), of Sintered and Bonded type.

Features

SmCo Magnets are generally ranked similarly in strength to neodymium magnets, but have higher temperature ratings and higher coercivity, extremely resistant to demagnetization.
SmCo is Good temperature stability (maximum use temperatures between 250 °C (523 K) and 550 °C (823 K); Curie temperatures from 700 °C (973 K) to 800 °C (1,070 K) SmCo is brittle, and prone to cracking and chipping.

Property

Some important properties used to compare permanent magnets are:

  • Remanence (Br), measure the strength of the magnetic field;
  • Energy product (BHmax), the density of magnetic energy, which relates to the magnetic flux output per unit volume. Higher values indicate stronger magnets;
  • Curie temperature (Tc), the temperature at which the material loses its magnetism.

SmCo magnets could be made into various shapes:

  • Disk/Cylinder, Bar/Block, Ring, Arc, etc.
